Family Dental Practice Vs. General Dental Practice

A “Family” dental practice has many similarities to a “General” dental practice. Both models are the primary care setting for oral health care or dental care. However, the main difference between the two practice models is significant.  The Family practice provides care for all ages and all family members.

There are many advantages to the Family model. As a provider in this type of practice, the “Family History” is much more than just a line on the medical history form. It is rewarding and helpful for the dentist when he/she can meet each family member and treat them all as patients. Also, it is beneficial for each family member as they get to meet and form a professional relationship with the same dentist.

Recently, I noticed the Family Practice is generational. I had a patient who has been coming to our practice since we opened in Nashville in 2000. We were chatting about how I have seen FOUR generations of her family in our dental practice! This lady is approximately my age.  Her grandmother, parents and children have all been patients with us! Her lovely grandmother since passed. It was an honor to get to know her.

I left that room and went to do a “checkup” exam on a patient who was in for a preventive care dental cleaning.  That patient was in with her four-year-old son. It is a compliment that this adorable and hilarious young man knows who I am and that I am HIS dentist. He showed off his Tonka truck and bubble blower he received for Christmas.

Next, I went to another room to do a filling on a lady who has been with us for a decade!  Of course, her husband and daughters have also been our patients. Well, guess what we talked about? Her oldest daughter is pregnant!  She is about to be a grandmother for the first time.  And, in a few years, we will have a new patient!  Then we will be blessed to take care of the third generation of their family, assuming and god-willing they do not move out of Nashville.

I write this to reflect on how fortunate we all are to have families that trust us with the oral health of multiple generations.  It is an honor and responsibility.
