Cosmetic dentistry refers to procedures, ranging from teeth whitening to veneers, that are used to improve the appearance of a patient’s teeth and gums. Some dental procedures may be purely cosmetic. Others can be both cosmetic and functional, such as using a composite filling material that matches the patient’s tooth color and certain orthodontic treatments, like Invisalign, invisible aligner trays.
Many cosmetic dentistry techniques are taught in dental school. Tooth whitening, for example, is a standard general dentistry procedure. Composite and porcelain fillings are other examples of a routine dental procedure with cosmetic applications. Some dentists take additional training in postgraduate courses for more specialized procedures. Since this is not considered routine general dentistry, the dentist typically receives a special certificate commemorating the additional training.
Like any technical skill, performing the same procedure many times increases the odds that a cosmetic dentist will be technically competent; experience counts when selecting a cosmetic dentist. As with all healthcare professionals, a good cosmetic dentist should invite and answer questions, be able to build rapport with patients, and involve them in their care and decisions about treatment. Most dentists keep before and after pictures of patients to showcase their skills.
It’s important for patients to have reasonable expectations. For example, tooth whitening may not achieve the same appearance as veneers, which actually cover up stained teeth. There are a number of different cosmetic dental procedures, and they typically differ in terms of the time needed, the cost and number of appointments required. A single tooth whitening treatment may be all the patient needs in some cases. Veneers, crowns, and bridges typically take just two visits. Some procedures are technically more difficult and will need a longer appointment time.
