Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to a number of different techniques used to help patients relax during dental procedures. Mild sedation often entails the use of a combination of medicines, including a sedative to help patients relax, and an anesthetic to block pain. With most sedation dentistry, patients are awake but are drowsy and relaxed. Other sedation options include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), or a procedure called full conscious sedation with intravenous medications. With any of these forms of sedation, patients remain aware during the procedure but might doze a little. Patients, however, will not prevent sensations of pain or anxiety. Patients must have a driver after the procedure, as it is not safe for them to drive for 24 hours.

What is Deep Sedation?

General anesthesia is the only form of deep sedation in which patients are truly asleep. This deep form of sedation can only be administered by an anesthesiologist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. While under general anesthesia, patients are not easily awakened until the anesthesia wears off. Only a board certified anesthesiologist can provide deep sedation. Dr. Yzerski of our staff is certified in general anesthesia by the Tennessee Dental Board and the Kentucky Board of Dentistry. When undergoing deep sedation dentistry, many of our patients opt to have all of their dental work done at once. Four members of our team are in the room at the time a patient is deeply sedated to ensure their utmost safety.

When Is Sedation Dentistry Used?

Sedation dentistry is used for major or complex procedures, as well as, for any procedure that elicits severe anxiety and fear for a patient. Sedation can also be of benefit to small children who have badly neglected teeth that require multiple procedures. It is also useful for patients who have a severe gag reflex or very sensitive teeth.
