Veneers Q & A

What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin coverings over the teeth, similar to a false front on a building or a thin shell of expensive wood on a piece of furniture. They are used to cover minor imperfections or to hide stains and irregularities. Each veneer is custom-shaped and fitted to the individual tooth. Veneers may be made of porcelain or resin composites. Veneers can give the appearance of straighter teeth, although unlike braces, they don’t actually make the teeth straighter.

What Are Veneers Made of?

Most veneers are made from porcelain. They are essentially a very thin, translucent shell that is bonded to the natural tooth. They can last for 10 to 15 years, resist staining, and give a sense of depth and shine that is comparable to a natural tooth. However, they can break, and if they do, they cannot be repaired but rather must be removed and replaced. Composite veneers are made from a resinous material that can be shaped on the natural tooth; the tooth must be planed down to prevent excessive bulk after the veneer is applied. They are cured with a special light and then polished.

When Are Veneers Used?

If a stained tooth doesn’t respond to bleaching, a veneer may be used. Veneers are particularly effective to cover internal stains that can’t be bleached. Veneers can hide a gap between front teeth or cover a chipped tooth. If only one or two teeth are slightly crooked, the veneer can cover the crooked teeth and make them appear straight.

How Many Appointments Will I Need?

Each case is different but in general, two appointments are all that are needed for veneers. At the first appointment, the dentist assesses the teeth and develops an individualized treatment plan. Then your teeth are shaped and buffed in preparation for the dental veneer. At the second and final appointment, the veneers will be fitted, adjusted as necessary and attached to the natural teeth. Sometimes an appointment is necessary several weeks later to ensure that no problems have occurred.
