Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You If You're Nervous About the Dentist?
If the thought of a dental appointment makes your stomach turn, you're far from alone. Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off care until a small problem turns into a bigger one. At Roach Family Dentistry, we built our practice around your time, comfort, and budget, and that includes sedation options for patients who need a little extra help feeling at ease.

Why So Many People Put Off the Dentist
Whether it's a past bad experience, a sensitive gag reflex, needle anxiety, or just the sound of the drill, dental fear is real and it's common. The trouble is that avoiding care usually makes things worse: small issues turn into bigger, more involved ones. Sedation dentistry exists to help break that cycle.
What Sedation Options Are Actually Available
We offer a few different levels of sedation, so your care can be matched to how anxious you feel and what the procedure calls for, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Nitrous Oxide: The Mildest Option
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the lightest form of sedation we offer. It's inhaled through a small mask, takes effect quickly, and wears off just as fast. Most patients feel back to normal within minutes of the mask coming off and are able to drive themselves home afterward. It's a great option if you just need to take the edge off.
Mild Sedation: A Deeper Level of Calm
For patients who need more than nitrous oxide, we also offer mild sedation, which combines a sedative with an anesthetic. You'll stay awake throughout the procedure, but you'll feel drowsy and deeply relaxed. Because of how the medication affects you, you'll need someone to drive you home afterward and should avoid operating machinery for 24 hours.
For More Involved Procedures
For major surgeries or more complex procedures, deeper sedation options are also available. We'll walk you through what makes sense for your specific situation during a consultation.
What to Expect on the Day
Plan to arrive with a driver already lined up if you're having anything beyond nitrous oxide, and clear your schedule for the rest of the day. Wear comfortable clothing, and don't hesitate to tell our team exactly what makes you anxious. We tailor our approach patient by patient.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
If dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, or a packed procedure list has kept you out of the chair, sedation dentistry might be exactly what makes it possible to finally get the care you need. It's one more way we try to make sure comfort never gets in the way of a healthy smile.

FAQ section (add to the bottom of the post, before Recent Posts)
Will I be awake during sedation dentistry?
With nitrous oxide and mild sedation, yes, you'll stay awake but feel relaxed and drowsy. Deeper sedation options, used for more involved procedures, work differently and are discussed during a consultation.
Do I need someone to drive me home after sedation?
For anything beyond nitrous oxide, yes. The medications used in mild sedation and beyond can affect coordination and alertness for several hours, so you'll need a ride home and should avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours.
Is sedation dentistry only for major procedures?
No. While it's often used for more complex procedures, many patients use lighter sedation options like nitrous oxide simply to manage anxiety or a sensitive gag reflex during routine care.
